Barcelona: ICN Congress May 2017

I was pleased to hear from the International Council of Nurses that one of the abstracts I submitted for the 2017 Congress in Barcelona was accepted. That meant all I had to do was write a paper, prepare a 15 minute presentation and get myself to Barcelona... Guess which was the easy part?

As one of life's little ironies, the abstract that I really really wanted to do wasn't accepted - Embedded critics: what can we learn about the quality of nursing service when nurses themselves are patients?

But there was still plenty to say in the one I did present Nursing work in acute settings: what must endure, what can change?  And as it turned out, I brought the patient story from 'Embedded critics' into that presentation.

Feedback on the presentation

  • It's very powerful (colleagues at Capital and Coast DHB responding to my practice presentation of the draft).
  • Looking really good, I love the key messages.... It's great, Shelley, and I wish I was there to see it! (peer reviewer).
  • I think it's fabulous... I wouldn't suggest any changes. As ever you are thought provoking... Go well. I'm sure you will inspire the room as you always inspire me (peer reviewer).
  • Not a word wasted (NZ colleague at the Congress).
  • [When you got to the patient story] it just went deeper (Canadian colleague at the Congress).
  • We will remember your words forever (session convener at the Congress).

I'm happy to do this presentation in person - it's relevant to patient safety and planning for staffing mix - please ask me.
